For the first time, a single Space Force squadron will operate both a signal-detection system and an offensive jammer under one roof, a pairing that officials say marks a shift from watching adversaries interfere with satellites to actually doing something about it.
The squadron falls under Mission Delta 3, the Space Force's electromagnetic warfare organization, and its personnel are scattered across five locations rather than concentrated at Peterson. That distributed footprint is itself a legacy of how the unit came together: its ranks draw heavily on Air National Guardsmen who transferred into the Space Force in October 2025, when five ANG electromagnetic warfare squadrons β among nine space-focused Air National Guard units whose missions moved to the service that month β were absorbed. Across all nine units, the Space Force selected 99 Guardsmen for full-time active-duty roles. Squadron commander Lt. Col. Two Systems, One Squadron

It's designed to detect and geolocate interference aimed at satellite communications β a defensive, listening-post tool: when someone jams a U.S. satellite link, Bounty Hunter helps figure out where the jamming is coming from. The system got a substantial refresh in 2021 with the fielding of a Bounty Hunter 2.0 training system, keeping the platform current even as the Space Force reorganized around it.
Meadowlands is the newcomer. Built by L3Harris, it's a mobile, ground-based jammer capable of detecting, identifying, denying, disrupting and degrading an adversary's satellite communications and radar. According to a DoD-affiliated feature on the shift, Meadowlands is particularly well suited to disrupt "long haul" satellite communications that might be used in austere environments like the desert β the kind of connectivity an adversary might rely on far from its own infrastructure. Where Bounty Hunter tells operators that someone is jamming U.S. systems, Meadowlands gives the Space Force a tool to jam back, or to deny an adversary's own satellite links before a conflict escalates.
Putting both capabilities in the same squadron, rather than splitting detection and disruption across separate units, is the structural change officials are pointing to. It's a small organizational move on paper, but it collapses the distance between identifying a threat and countering it into a single chain of command.
From Watching to Maneuvering
The activation fits into language Space Force leadership has been using for months to describe a broader doctrinal shift. Gen. Chance Saltzman, the service's chief, has described the Space Force's core purpose as achieving "space superiority" β ensuring freedom of movement in space for U.S. forces "while denying the same to our adversaries," in his words. That framing lines up with how officials describe the broader move: a shift from passively monitoring a congested and contested space domain to actively defending it. Meadowlands itself fits that pattern directly β it has been described as a mobile, smaller-footprint "critical upgrade" to the Counter Communications System, the electromagnetic warfare tool Mission Delta 3 has relied on for years. The 1st Electromagnetic Warfare Squadron, pairing that upgraded jamming capability with Bounty Hunter's detection under a single command, is presented as an early structural expression of that shift: sensors and effectors organized to work together rather than being federated across separate units.
Why It Matters
Electromagnetic warfare in orbit is largely invisible to the public, but it is not a marginal concern for military planners. Satellite communications, GPS-derived positioning and timing, and radar systems underpin everything from precision munitions guidance to how deployed forces talk to each other, and adversaries have spent years building up jamming and spoofing capabilities aimed at exactly those links. A squadron that can both detect interference and immediately respond to it β rather than relaying a detection to a separate unit for action β shortens the time between "we're being jammed" and "we're doing something about it," which matters enormously in a fast-moving conflict.
