The Space Force has handed SpaceX another sizable chunk of its launch manifest. On July 29, 2026, Space Systems Command awarded the company two task orders worth a combined $1.6 billion covering 18 Falcon 9 launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, all to fly before the end of 2027. The payloads: satellites for the Space-Based Sensing and Targeting (SBST) portfolio, a family of programs built to watch the sky for threats and get that information into the hands of American forces fast.

The centerpiece of SBST is the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program, or SB-AMTI β€” a constellation designed to track airborne objects from space and route near-real-time targeting data across the Joint Force. According to Breaking Defense, SB-AMTI is designed to complement the Air Force's E-7 Wedgetail, the airborne early-warning and control aircraft developed to replace the aging E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft β€” pairing a space-based sensing layer with the Air Force's existing airborne one.

The award itself moved fast by defense-acquisition standards. Col. Eric Zarybnisky, quoted in Air & Space Forces Magazine, touted a roughly two-month gap between when the requirement was defined and when the contract was signed β€” a pace the Space Force has been eager to show off as it tries to prove its newer contracting lanes can keep up with a launch schedule that keeps getting more crowded.

Why It Matters

Two things make this award more than a routine launch buy. First, the timing: this is the first task order issued since the Space Force expanded the ceiling on its National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 contract vehicle from $5.6 billion to $17 billion on July 17. Lane 1 was built as the on-ramp for less risk-averse missions β€” commercial-class buys that don't require the same certification rigor as Lane 2's most sensitive national security payloads β€” and now has seven approved providers: SpaceX, ULA, Blue Origin, Stoke Space, Rocket Lab, Relativity, and Impulse Space. Tripling the ceiling signals the Pentagon expects to lean on that lane heavily in the coming years, and SpaceX just became the first to cash in on the expanded room.

Second, the scale of demand behind it. Air & Space Forces Magazine and Breaking Defense both report the Space Force expects demand for Lane 1 launches specifically to climb from roughly 60 missions to as many as 170 between 2025 and 2034 β€” nearly a tripling in under a decade. That growth is being driven by exactly the kind of proliferated, resilient architectures SBST represents: rather than a handful of exquisite, billion-dollar satellites, the Pentagon is increasingly building out larger constellations of sensing and targeting spacecraft that are harder to knock out with a single strike and can refresh data more frequently. Getting all of that mass into orbit means more launches, and right now SpaceX's Falcon 9 is still the workhorse capable of absorbing that volume on short notice.

This award also adds to what's already been a big year for SpaceX's military business. In May, the company separately won more than $6 billion in contracts to build satellites for the SB-AMTI program and the Space Data Network, including a $4.16 billion task order for SB-AMTI itself, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine and Breaking Defense. For a Space Force still working to diversify its launch base beyond SpaceX and ULA, that concentration is worth watching β€” even as the newly widened Lane 1 ceiling creates more room, at least on paper, for the other five certified providers to compete for future task orders.

For SB-AMTI specifically, the strategic logic is straightforward: airborne threats β€” cruise missiles, drones, aircraft β€” move fast, and a ground- or air-based radar network has coverage gaps and vulnerabilities. A space-based sensing layer, if it can persistently track moving targets and pipe that data to shooters in near-real time, closes some of those gaps and gives commanders another sensing layer that's harder to jam or shoot down than a single AWACS-style aircraft. Whether the constellation can deliver on that promise on schedule, across 18 launches over roughly a year and a half, is the next thing worth watching.
